Discover Weekly: Travel Junkie's Must See Movies

Get yourselves ready for a movie marathon and grab yourselves a popcorn! Here's a list of my personal favorite movies that inspires me to keep on traveling. It's a movie every travel junkie must watch!

The Beach
Young Leo, Richard, as a backpacker ventures to Thailand to look for adventure. He meets this crazy dude named Daffy, who then talks about a secret island in Thailand that has a pristine lagoon and is literally a paradise. Before Daffy commits suicide, he leaves Richard a map to the hidden paradise and then asks a french couple to go with him on an adventure. When they got there, they didn't want to leave. It's definitely a movie for travelers who seeks adventures and who wants to get out of the city. I didn't just like to movie because of Leo, I promise!

After her mother dies of cancer, it totally messed up her life. After she got a divorce, she decided to hike 1,100 mile of 2,650 mile of the Pacific Crest Trail alone in a journey of self-discovery and healing. The hike took up 94 days to finish. This is definitely a movie where you can learn a thing or two about survival in a hike.

The Bucket List
This is a story of two men who have cancer, not a very good start of a paragraph but yep. Carter (Morgan Freeman), who is confined in a hospital after being diagnosed with the big "C" word, have met Cole (Jack Nicholson), another cancer patient in a room they shared in the hospital. Turns out, Cole is the owner of the hospital. They both got along together and one day, Cole saw that Carter was writing something - it was a bucket list. It's a list of things you'd like to do before you die. And Cole, being rich and all made it possible for them to do their bucket list.

Chasing Liberty
This is a romantic-comedy  movie. I'm not sure it's a legit travel movie but this movie takes us to the the best parts of Europe like, Prague, Berlin, and Venice. Anna Foster (Mandy Moore) is the president's daughter who demands freedom from her father who has her on watch by security 24/7. When she was in Prague, she saw a number of security officers that was watching her after her dad made a promise that there will only be two body guards for her when she goes to Europe. Then she met Ben (Matthew Goode) and rode on his motorcylce to make an escape, hence the beginning of her adventure. Note: This is where I got my crazy idea to put "Bungee Jump" on my bucket list.

Leap Year
I am not just putting this on the list because of Matthew Goode, of course. His movies are just great, okay? Also a romance, this movie is about a girl, Anna (Amy Adams) who got tired of waiting for her boyfriend to propose to her. When her boyfriend was traveling to Dublin, Ireland for a work matter, she learned that there is an old Celtic tradition that on February 29, a leap day, a lady is allowed to propose to her boyfriend. She took a plane to Dublin, but the storm diverts the plane to Wales instead. e needed to be in Dublin exactly on the 29th of February and so she'll do whatever it takes. This movie shows how beautiful the Irish country-side is! And I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Ireland because I have relatives who live there. :)

Under  The Tuscan Sun
For my people who would love to visit Italy, home of pizza and pasta, someday, this is the movie for you. It's a story about a girl who just got out of a divorce and decided to leave her life back in San Francisco to move to Tuscany, Italy. The idea of moving to a foreign country where there is no one you know, or no one familiar has always lingered in my mind. To have a fresh start has always seemed to be a great idea.

  The Motorcycle Diaries

"How is it possible that I feel nostalgia for a world I never knew?"
This is one of the most inspiring movies in the film industry. Honestly, I know Che Guevara is an icon but I didn't know why and how until I saw this movie. Che together with his friend, rode a motorbike on their journey from Brazil to Peru. While traveling through South America, they then witnessed the poverty throughout South America. They met poor people along the way, some of which we're oppressed by the rich people. This movie will take you Venezuela, Chile, and they even hiked Machu Pichu (my dream mountain) in Peru.

For everyone who have seen Eurotrip, ya'll know that it's a story of a boy who flew to Europe to meet his pen pal in Germany after having a brutal break up with his girlfriend who was constantly cheating on him behind his back, Scotty didn't know! When he learned that his pen pal was actually a hot girl, he rushes to Europe to meet her and tell her that he loves her. This movie is truly an adventure, it's all about getting lost with your dumb friends on a foreign country, EPIC!

Before Sunrise

"If there's any kind of magic in this world, it must be in the attempt of understanding someone. Sharing something."

Before sunrise- is a movie about a girl and a boy who met in a train. When the boy was about to get off the train, he asked if the girl could come with him to explore Venice before he comes back home to America in the morning. The girl agrees of course. And they roamed around the city of Venice until before sunrise when they have to go their separate ways. I always liked the idea of opening up to the perfect stranger, that way he can't judge you and you'll know that you'll never see them again. They really talked about serious things, it was incredible.

Eat Pray Love
"I'm in love. I'm in a relationship with my pizza."
Liz was successful in life, she had the career she wanted, a house, and a husband. After realizing that she was unhappy with her marriage, she takes on a journey of self-discovery in Italy, India and Bali. This movie shows us that the best food in the world is in Italy (sorry, i love italian food). Tries to heal herself by meditating in India. And finding love in Bali.

Into The Wild

"Happiness is only real when shared."

This is my favorite travel movie yet! Based from a true story, Christopher McCandless gets rid of his possessions and donates his entire savings to charity after graduating university as he decided to escape his old life, his parents. He names himself as an Alexander Supertramp - something hikers do. He goes on to his great Alaskan adventure, through hitchhiking and living in the wild. It was a really deep movie- while traveling, he met people that forever shaped his life. Although it did not have the most beautiful ending, in the end it's the life that he experienced into the wild that made him really happy.

  1. Ahhhh, Before Sunrise is probably on my permanent list of favorite movies. Watching that made me think about love and life in general, but at the same time, sparked a little something that made me wanna hop a train in Europe, too. But for now, that's too far-fetched pa. Haha! Among this list, I've only watched 3 (including Eurotrip and The Bucketlist). Haha. Will try to catch up on some more once I get copies. :p

    xx, The Diary Queen

    1. Yeah, they talked about very interesting topics! You should totally watch the other movies, they really inspired me, not just to travel but thought me some great life lessons as well :)

  2. I am so outdated. I've only watched Chasing Liberty and Leap Year. Time to download some of these movies. Thanks. Great list!

    Wannderzel by Hazel Asoy

    1. Yeah, it did. It was a weird to me at first but it was amazing how she was determined to finish her trail. :)

  5. Loving the list. I am going to watch each of them. Thank you

  6. Nice one! I usually turn to movies before going on my travels and I think it's a great way to feel more inspired. Great list btw!

  7. I've only watched three!
yung Eurotrip yung grabe, lakas trip! Hahaha di ko maimagine sarili ko sa ganon, yung go with the flow haha siguro kung madami akong pera haha pero di rin eh, nakakatakot din hahahaha

  8. OMG YES EUROTRIP! The movie is super hilarious and the soundtrack is my jam. I like the French version of "My Generation" a lot, and they revived classics such as "Wild One". And oh BTW, "Leap Year" was inspired by a Bollywood film called "Jab We Met". It's also about travel too, but more on the Indian country side. It's my favorite Bollywood film, and romcom in general. The songs are really good too hahaha
